Our Community and City: Students Illustrate Note Cards for Pittsburgh History & Landmarks
Since 2001, the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation and The Historical Society of Mount Lebanon have partnered with the Mt. Lebanon School District in an award-winning Social Studies unit that helps second-grade students develop a sense of community awareness, pride, and belonging. As a result,the students used their artistic talents to illustrate note cards that will benefit the educational programs of PHLF and the Historical Society.
Mt. Lebanon High School Offers Pre-School Program
Mt. Lebanon High School will once again offer a preschool program for three and four year olds. To be eligible children must be at least age 3 ½ by March 1, 2016, and 4 year olds must be no older than four years ten months by March 1, 2016. The program is operated by high school students enrolled in the Advanced Child Development Course under the supervision of the child development teacher.
School Board Welcomes New Directors and Elects Leadership
The Mt. Lebanon School Board held their reorganization meeting on December 7, 2015. Judge Terrence McVerry conducted the swearing- in of new school directors Hugh Beal and Sarah Olbrich along with re-elected directors Lawrence Lebowitz, Elaine Cappucci and William Cooper. In a unanimous vote, the Board elected Lawrence Lebowitz to a second one-year term as Board President, and Mary Birks as Vice President.
JMS Brings Joy and Music to Shoppers at the Galleria
The Jefferson Middle School Wind Ensemble performed their annual Holiday Concert at the Galleria Mall on December 15th to the delight of parents and shoppers.
Model UN Students Sweep Model European Union Competition
Our high school Model UN students had great success at the Model European Union (Model EU) competition held on Wednesday, December 2nd. The competition was sponsored by the Center for European Studies

MTLSD Earns Meritorious Budget Award
The Mt. Lebanon School District and Business Director Janice Klein has been awarded the Meritorious Budget Award for Excellence in budget presentation for 2015-16 by the Association of School Business Officials International.
High School Senior Chosen for German STEM Workshop in Berlin
Congratulations to Mt. Lebanon High School Senior Noah Donald who was chosen as one of only twelve students nationwide to attend the Deutschland für MINTeressierte Workshop (Germany for STEM Students Workshop) in an all expense-paid trip to Germany.
Mt. Lebanon School District Honors Our Veterans
Each year the Mt. Lebanon School District observes Veterans Day and joins the nation to recognize and honor all those Americans who have served our country in the Armed Services. Today, there are more than 25 million veterans living among us. This day reminds us that we need to pause and recognize the contributions made by our veterans and those currently serving, and thank them for their devotion to our country.

High School Takes 2nd Place at RMU Science Bowl
Mt. Lebanon High School took 2nd place at the Robert Morris University Science Bowl on Saturday, Nov. 7 where schools competed against each other, answering timed science questions in a jeopardy-like setting.
Welcome Home, Dad!
It was quite a homecoming surprise. Tim Hodgson MSgt US Air Force just returned from a tour in Iraq and hadn’t seen his family since last spring. Today, he surprised his sons Luke, a student at Howe Elementary School, and Bradley, a sophomore at the high school, with a homecoming visit to their schools.

Mellon Career Day: So Many Choices!
Today was Career Day at Mellon Middle School. Students in 8th grade had the chance to hear from professionals in a variety of fields including finance, law, entertainment, veterinary medicine, emergency room medicine, culinary arts and fashion design. Grace Tandon, known as the singer Daya, stopped by her middle school to talk about the music industry.

Jefferson Elementary School students welcomed Newbery winner and National Ambassador for Youth Literature, Kate DiCamillo, on October 15.
The 2015 Great Alumni Honored at High School Award Luncheon
Mt. Lebanon High School rolled out the red carpet to welcome back the Great Alumni of 2015 and their friends, families and teachers for the award luncheon on Sept. 25. This year's recipients are Reverend Father John Chakos '59, Jack Daly '84, Gregg Gnipp '86, Lawrence Lebowitz '80, and Josephine Posti '86.

Each year Dr. Steinhauer holds a coffee for the men and women who serve as Mt. Lebanon crossing guards to thank them for the outstanding job they do to keep our students safe on their way to and from school. The guards not only serve the school community where they are assigned, but they are also an integral part of our school safety plan.

It was an Alumni Weekend at Mt. Lebanon High School kicking off last Friday with the Great Alumni recognition, then the annual Almuni Tailgate on Friday night, and ending with class reunion tours of the new high school on Saturday for the classes of 1965, 1970, and 1980.
Buckle Up PA:Teen Education and Enforcement of Seat Belt Use
The Mt. Lebanon Police Department would like to remind all student drivers and student age passengers to wear their seat belt when in a car. Law enforcement officials will be around the high school for targeted enforcement and issuing tickets the week of October 19 making sure seat belts are worn.

Balloon Launch Lifts Off Year Long Student Project
A team of about 35 students worked for over a year to send a weather balloon 100,000 feet into the atmosphere to collect data such as UV light and Ozone concentration. Launch day took place on Saturday, Dec. 5 at the high school stadium.
Student Wins "Chemistry Colors Our World" Illustration Contest
The Pittsburgh Section of the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) sponsored an illustrated poem contest for students in grades K-12 in support of the 2015 National Chemistry Week (NCW) program.Congratulations to David O’Matz, a student at Mt. Lebanon High School, who won first place in the 9th-12th grade category.
Pittsburgh Opera Visits Mt. Lebanon Schools
This week, Pittsburgh Opera artists will be visiting our elementary schools to introduce students to the magical music and storytelling of opera. The students also learned that one of the Pittsburgh Opera performers was Mia Bonnewell, a former Markham student, a 2005 graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School and a former music student of Mrs. Fox. That earned Mia a big Markham Brava!
JMS Student Council Exec Board Attends PASC State Conference
On November 12-14th, the Jefferson Middle School Student Council's Executive Board members had the opportunity to attend the PASC state conference in Harrisburg. The theme of this year's conference was "It's time to CLIMB." CLIMB stands for Care, Lead, Improve, Motivate, and Build.

Ten Mt. Lebanon Students Named National Merit Semifinalists
The officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 61th annual National Merit Scholarship Program and ten Mt. Lebanon High School students were among list of semifinalists. Congratulations to the following students who were selected as 2016 National Merit Semifinalist: Ian Harris, Caroline Horrigan, Joshua Kalapos, Francesca Kavalir, Nancy Lu, Ziqi Meng, Stephen Porter, Madelyn Rice, Erik Sargent, and Jiawen Zhu.
United States Army Brass Quintet and Lebo Alumna Adrienne Doctor to Perform at Band Festival Tonight

At the Monday night school board meeting, the Mt. Lebanon School Board unanimously approved the hiring of Joel G. Thompson as the new unit principal of Mt. Lebanon High School.

School Board Approves Hire of High School Dean of Students
The Mt. Lebanon School Board unanimously approved the hiring of Carlene L. McGinty as Mt. Lebanon High School Dean of Students at the December 14, 2015 meeting. Ms. McGinty is currently a school counselor at Upper St. Clair High School where she has served since 2012. A start date is still to be determined.
School Board Approves New Director of Advancement and MLFE Executive Director
The Mt. Lebanon School Board unanimously approved Sloane McCabe Astorino as Director of Advancement at the October 12, 2015 School Board meeting. Ms. Astorino will lead the District’s Century of Excellence Capital Campaign and will be the Executive Director of the Mt. Lebanon Foundation for Education.
Mt. Lebanon School District Educators Recognized at Champions of Change Celebration
The Mt. Lebanon School District is pleased to announce that Ms. Casey Lewis, Kindergarten teacher at Jefferson Elementary School, and Mr. Mike Hladiao, 8th Grade English teacher at Jefferson Middle School, have been named “Champions of Change” by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit’s Center for Creativity and its partner, Common Sense Media.

Mt. Lebanon High School will officially name the new high school library in honor of 1952 Mt. Lebanon High School graduate Richard J. Madden. A ribbon cutting ceremony took place during the high school dedication event.
Welcome Back, Mark Cuban!
Mark Cuban, star of the TV series "Shark Tank" and owner of the Dallas Mavericks, made a surprise visit to the high school today. Cuban, a 1976 Lebo grad and Great Alumni recipient, stopped by the high school to take a tour of his alma mater.
